Prolific fiction writer and cultural essayist Shouhua Qi (pronounced āChiā) will read at Saturday Scribesā February 13th gathering at The Studio Around the Corner, 67 Main Street, in Brewster.Ā Open mic begins at 7 p.m. for those who wish to share work in progress or just enjoy an evening of words.Ā The headliner will follow immediately afterward.
A prolific author of over a dozen books published in both the United States and China, Qiās first novel, When the Purple Mountain Burns chronicles the 1937-38 Rape of Nanking in the authorās hometown.Ā His adapted screenplay of the book has been optioned for production.Ā Qiās second novel Twin-Sun River examines an American Korean War POWās predicaments in modern China.Ā Staged readings of a screenplay based on the latter have been produced at New Yorkās National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and Shanghai Theater Academy.
Qiās other publications include Red Guard Fantasies and other Stories, The Pearl Jacket, and Bridging the Pacific.Ā He is Professor of English at Western Connecticut State University.
